Managing Blood Pressure Spikes at Home: An Emergency Guide
Understanding Blood Pressure Readings
A sudden high reading on your digital blood pressure monitor can cause anxiety, which ironically spikes blood pressure further.
Immediate Action Plan:
- Wait & Rest: Sit quietly in a supportive chair with feet flat on the floor for 5 minutes. Do not speak, drink caffeine, or move.
- Re-measure Correctly: Ensure the cuff is placed 1 inch above the elbow crease at heart level. Take two readings 2 minutes apart and average them.
- Check for Red Flags:
- Severe occipital headache
- Blurry vision or visual disturbances
- Chest discomfort or radiating arm pain
- Shortness of breath or confusion
- Numbness on one side of the body
