Diabetic Foot Care: Daily 5-Minute Prevention Routine
Daily 5-Step Foot Examination
Diabetic neuropathy reduces pain sensation, meaning minor blisters or cuts can develop into serious ulcers without notice.
- Visual Scan: Use a handheld mirror or family member to inspect the bottom of feet, heels, and between toes for cracks, redness, or calluses.
- Lukewarm Wash: Wash feet daily in lukewarm water (test water with elbow, not feet). Do not soak for more than 5 minutes to prevent maceration.
- Thorough Drying: Gently pat dry with a soft towel, paying meticulous attention to drying between each toe.
- Moisturize Safely: Apply urea-based moisturizer to heels and soles, never between toes (moisture between toes breeds fungal infection).
- Proper Footwear: Never walk barefoot, even indoors. Always check the inside of shoes for pebbles or folds before putting them on.
